Pompeii was buried in 79 AD during the terrible and devastating eruption of mount Vesuvius. It was covered in layers of ash and lapillus. In 1748, during the reign of King Charles of Bourbon, excavations began, luring royalty, writers, artists, and ordinary people from everywhere. They had an irresistible curiosity to visit and see for themselves the ancient city as it was brought back to the world, almost intact in its splendor!

To intrigue our younger visitors we begin our journey from the Amphitheatre. The Amphitheater was built in 70 A.D., before the Colosseum and is one of the oldest in the world.

The arena was used for the popular ludi gladiatorii, the gladiator shows, so famous during the Roman times. The amphitheater could seat around 20,000 spectators, not only citizens of Pompeii but also the inhabitants of the surrounding towns. Tacitus tells us in his “Annales” the brawl that occurred between Pompeian and residents of Nocera during a game, which caused many deaths.

Next to the Amphiteather is the Palextra, the gym area, which was built during the time of Augustus, to offer to the young Pompeian a space for sports. Another reason for the building could be the setting of Augustus to gather young people in associations, in order to give them an education not only physical, but also political, offering them a position destined to become a symbol of imperial propaganda.

Before we reach the main street, we cannot miss the so called “Garden of the fugitives”. The Garden of the Fugitives holds the largest number of victims found in one place. It was originally a vineyard and took its name from the amount of dead bodies which were found in it.

From here, we will walk towards Pompeii’s main square, the forum. We pass the typical shops, with their original counters and decorations and reach the fullonica, a laundry, where clothes were not only washed but the workers could dye them as well.

After the visit of Pompeii by car we will reach the area of mount Vesuvius.

Mount Vesuvius is one of the most well known volcanoes in the world and you can’t miss a trip to the top! The most famous eruption was that one of the 79 AD, that buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and the last eruption was in march 1944.

The area of mount Vesuvius belongs to the Italian National Parks, with a lush vegetation typical of the Mediterranean bush. The flower symbol of the park is the broom, that during the blooming period may-july covers the mountain in a brilliant yellow colour, it inspired a famous Italian poet Leopardi to write a poem called “the Broom”.

The mountain is approximately 1200m, by car we can reach 1000m and we climb the rest.

Once at the top you will look inside the crater and see fumaroles.

From the top you’ll have stunning views of the picturesque bay of Naples from east to west.
