The Amalfi Coast is one of the most spectacular places in the world, completed in 1850, this 50 km long road soon became famous with travelers from all over for itsbreathtaking views, uncontaminated nature and historical heritage. It is named after the charming town of Amalfi, an old Maritime Republic, which during the Middle Agescontrolled the whole coast. In the middle ages, the Ancient Republic of Amalfi excelled in the Mediterranean for the skills of its merchants and sailors, who had formed strong, lucrative commercial relations with Byzantium, Jerusalem, Alexandria, and so forth. There were four Maritime Republics in Italy: Amalfi, Genova, Pisa, and Venice. In remembrance of the Maritime Republics’ old splendor, each year a historical regatta is held, with parades in period costumes. Amalfi holds the regatta every four years.

This area is very famous for ceramics. The production of this colorful pottery dates back to the XV century. The local factories produce series of products that are ideal memories of one’s vacation as well as unique pieces of considerable artistic and economic value.

The first town that we will pass is the charming Positano, one of the most picturesque and famous towns of the Amalfi Coast. Its vertical urban structure enchants the visitor, who remains impressed by man’s ability to build terraces against the mountain on which homes are supported. On the way to Amalfi, we pass the little village of Praiano, the amazingfjord of Furore, an ancient gorge that was a fishermen’s village andConca dei Marini.

The town of Amalfi is rich in history. In the historical centre the cathedral of Sant’Andrea rises steeply; its construction is a fusion of Arab, Byzantine and Christian elements. This religious complex is now a museum. Amalfi is also famous for hand-made paper.

About 300 meters above sea level is another “jewel” of the Amalfi Coast: Ravello. Ravello will enchant you with stunning views on the Coast. The little square is dominated by the Duomo’s Romanesque façade and the bell tower. Inside the church are the remarkable byzantine pulpit and ambo. Ravello is home to the two most stunning examples of“Garden Museums”Villa Rufoloand Villa Cimbrone. Villa Rufolo is a medieval building, where in 1879 Wagnerstayed, and who, enchanted by its gardens, found the inspiration to compose the last part of Parsifal.Villa Cimbrone stands on the edge of the town, approximatly 20 minuts far from the centre of town. Famous for its English and Italian gardens and for the breathtaking views from theInfinity Terrace.
